Romanesque lectern.

Freudenstadt City Church, Germany
Romanesque lectern still in use for church services thanks to its climate-controlled, high-security display case.

Created around 1150, the lectern is a unique masterpiece of medieval woodcarving. Apart from crucifixes, there are very few fully carved wooden works from this Romanesque period.

The four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, carry a widening lectern on a round beaded ring. On the sides are symbols of the evangelists: man, lion, bull and eagle. The 1.20 metre high lectern is carved from a willow trunk, with only the lid and the evangelists‘ symbols added.

The State of Baden-Württemberg guarantees the security of the wood carving and was therefore directly involved in the specification of the high-security display case through the State Office of Criminal Investigation.
